Mental health disorders are a significant concern worldwide, affecting a substantial portion of the global population. As of 2019, approximately 970 million people were living with a mental disorder, with anxiety and depression being the most prevalent conditions.  Recent data indicates that one in eight people globally lives with a mental disorder, reflecting a notable increase in recent years.

In Bangladesh, mental health issues are also prevalent. A survey conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health in 2018-19 revealed that 17% of adults in the country suffer from mild to severe mental health issues, with 19% of women and 15% of men affected. Among individuals under 18, 13.6% experience mental health challenges, but over 90% of them do not receive treatment.

The economic impact of mental health conditions is substantial. Globally, poor mental health is estimated to cost over $1 trillion each year in lost productivity, primarily due to depression and anxiety disorders.

These statistics underscore the critical need for increased awareness, improved access to mental health services, and the implementation of effective prevention and treatment strategies to address the growing mental health crisis both globally and within Bangladesh.
